The Maribor based urban gallery E2RD has prepared an exhibition titled Little Nude of the late Slovenian artist Janez Pristavec. It shows a series of modernistic nudes, which was created while he was still at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana at the end of the 1970's. The first ideas and concepts for the series are drawn as simple pencil sketches on paper in 1976. Two years later he creates more complex drawings, which become the basis for larger paintings on canvas and paper. Most of them come to fruition in 1978.
The predominant technique is acrylic but he also uses oil and watercolors. The artwork grabs the viewers attention due to its dynamically balanced color schemes and subtle composition. It's daring at times with some of the nudes appearing to be in distress, especially where sharp ink strokes are used to emphasize a darker side of the motif – a woman as an object of desire - which is enhanced by the seemingly unrefined bodies and faces. The exhibited pieces are the beginning of a long line of nudes drawn or painted devoid of any facial features. The women are either turning away from the viewer, we see them from the back or they invite us to imagine their expressions, while observing the gentle movement of their bodies elegantly lying or sitting in an intimate setting.
Most of the pieces shown at E2RD are exhibited for the first time.
This show is an introduction to a series of retrospective exhibitions, which will be organized by the Unuk gallery in 2018 on the 10th anniversary of the artist's death.
